The period suggests the year(s) when the original work was 
created and/or published. The entire work remains copyrighted for 
atleast 25-50 years from the year(s) as mentioned on the notice. 

The website http://www.whatiscopyright.org/ should clarify most of your 
doubts relevant to copyright notices.
