Actually, Linux is what you make it. You can use it as a desktop OS without
much trouble.
In fact, it's got the max. support for multimedia of any POSIX based OS,
AFAIK. There are people who use it professionally, and there are also people
using it as a home theatre, and things like that too. It's just how you set
it up. ;-)
