open the acroread file in vim and type LANG=C or LANG=eng_US followed by
export LANG on the next line. Things should work once you do this. I
think this problem has been solved in newer version of Acrobat Reader.
5.0.9 i think. To associate files, just right click on any .pdf file and
change the properties.
