[Ilugc] measuring ethernet throughput

Hi all,
Sorry it may be a off topic question.
What is the best way to measure the ethernet throughput?
By using a 100 MHz ethernet controller, how much maximum throughput 
can be obtained in a PC?  (Pentium 4 , 2.4 GHz running linux)        
I have used an utility called "bing", in which I never be able to cross 30mbps.
