sendmail is used to send outgoing email, it is a mailserver

fetchmail is a pop3 and imap client

anyway as I said, read http://www.hserus.net/dlhowto.html .. it'll answer
some of your questions, or failing that, will give you a working mutt +
sendmail + fetchmail setup if you just copy and paste.
