I have been using a very old Gimp 1.2 "pre-release", and now I notice,
version 2.0 supports scripting with perl, python and script-fu. Surely,
the basic tools for drawing kolams are available in Gimp. But writing a
workable script may be needlessly complex for the simple task at hand.
Probably, XaoS could also be modified to generate kolams of astronomical
But I wonder if any serious research has been done into _how_ kolams are
drawn by hand. I have had the pleasure of watching very complex kolams
getting drawn. Many of the designs and patterns are traditionally
passed down, but I doubt if there is any authoritative treatise on the
subject, though it is one of the 64 arts [48:"art of framing mystical
diagrams"]. Documenting the basic syntax, grammar and rules of kolam
drawing along with its traditional terminology may prove useful.
Probably the first step is the draw the dot grid, for which it would be
worthwhile to create a standard notation. [XaoS could do without dot
grids] The next would be to start mapping a route - either using
formulas or by hand. The game is that dots are laid in a grid, and are
"captured", and the final design has to be symmetrical to qualify as a
kolam. The more complex the pattern, the more its "share value".
The closest thing I have done to a kolam program is the chess horse
program at http://personal.vsnl.com/kr_chesshorse.html It may give a
few ideas on one approach for drawing kolams using a web interface.
