I bet they don't have the technical background or the
expertise. 

By evading with excuses, they are trying to avoid the
technical stuff :)

I would love to start an argument with them,
face-to-face.

Sure.

I use OpenOffice to do all my documentation, and
presentations.

If I were you, I would do the following:

1. Use Knoppix LiveCD (that runs on the RAM) and get
used to the interface.

2. Try the different applications and software
packages. 

You can then partition your hard disk or get another
hard disk and then install GNU/Linux to hard disk.
Depending on where you stay, someone might may be able
to help you or you can simply ask for help in this
mailing list.
