Sure! We are all here only to help!
Interesting to see that you attribute slowness or
"hanging" or freezing to viruses and worms.
I have never heard of any virus in the UNIX world. Not
even once. There are however worms, trapdoors, Trojan
horses blah blah blah.
Certainly not some Windoze like virus that slows down
the machine. In fact one of the main reasons folks
prefer Linux is for this fact; that it is completely
free of viruses.
Also mischief mongers don't want to hurt linux users,
so the possibility of there being future viruses also
is slim.
Worms are a totally different beasts however. They
usually cause havoc in the network like routers or
cause denial of service attacks. At best I think a
linux "virus" may hog your bandwidth, nothing more.
Anyway to answer ur question, you should check whether
you have setup sufficient swap space, try using hdparm
for your hard disk(usually not recommended) or use a
lightweight browser like netscape or even galeon if
your machine is an old one.
HTH,
Girish
