Guys,
I really don't follow the thread and I definitely
don't want to sidetrack it either.
My two cents would be that few months ago there was
some big furore over patents and media codecs or some
such thing in Europe and since mplayer is from Hungary
, there was a page citing that unless something was
done things would go wrong or anything.
As far as I am concerned mplayer is the be all end all
of all media playing in any OS. It is a breeze to
compile if required and you can hack it though the
code is not so well written or organized.
But the bottom line is it can play any damn file on
earth, be it audio, video, television, creating
successive screenshots from videos, or making your own
mng video.. It is simply amazing, mind blowing!
There is no equivalent.
Another program worthy of mention of course is ffmpeg.
It is so cool , you can convert any format to any
other with a simple command line, audio or video.
mplayer has the sort of stance that I would take. I
don't care about patents or legalese, I am a hacker
and I can reverse engineer if reqd, I will give users
what they want....
So just read "man mplayer" and also its html
documentation.
I am yet to find out what mplayer cannot do! :-)
regards,
Girish
