well u guys r not gonna like this. linux kernel is
buggy. its network drivers don't support many cards.
even FreeBSD has this issue. I found this working
perfectly only under OpenBSD and NetBSD.

In your case, of course both distros used same linux
OS but the built in driver support for cards must have
been different. 

Anyway since you solved the issue it is no use
discussing it. :-)
