in this context, I used this tool
testdisk(http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk)  to recover
partitions from accidental mkfs on it. testdisk is supposed to be used
for for finding files too. you could actually do your recovery

some intelligent scripting with linux disk editor(lde) could be useful too.
