Greetings!

Thanks for your inputs. I have now purchased the
following:

* Hitachi 80 GB HDD 7200 RPM for Rs.2500

* Gemini 3.5" external hdd casing for Rs. 725.

at Sagar Infosystems, Ritchie Street, Chennai.

I plugged it to the USB port of my T41 running Debian
GNU/Linux and it was detected as /dev/sda. I
partitioned it, and ran mke2fs to create the
filesystems.

Everything works great by default. Was able to take
the necessary backups.

Regards,

SK
