How do you say this? If ping works, it means everything is fine.

You cannot download e-mails via SMTP. You mean POP3 I suppose. 

If you are not able to send mails there could be many reasons. It is somewhat hard to get this working unlike before since now there is lot of spam control software running everywhere.

Are you able to properly use gaim? It means that everything is fine with network.
