do:
1. go to sourceforge.net
2. check the help wanted page
3. choose 2 or 3 projects
4. download, install and check them out - see if you are interested  
in joining the team
5. lurk on their mailing lists
6. write some code, patches, documentation
7. submit that
and, if you work hard, you may make the team

dont:
1. start talking on the mailing list the moment you join
2. demand commit rights before you submit anything
3. tell people that they chose the wrong language or the wrong  
development model
