A lame suggestion, but try adding
alias eth0 8139cp
<or>
alias eth0 8139too

to your /etc/modprobe.conf

I am not sure if that is right, though. Do correct me if that is
wrong. I wrote this because I did this a couple of times to get the
network card going.
