        The context to which I am replying is preserved in my reply --
 without resorting to top posting, and even with trimming. Even
 if this list were not archived, the posts are not so far apart as to
 require re-sending the entire thread for every response.

        Top posting merely scrambles the dialogue, and makes it hared to
 discern exactly which point was being responded to.
