Beware of service providers who provide you a private IP address and NAT
you out to the internet. It's impossible for you to host
web/ftp/ssh/etc on your
machine and access it from the internet. Many ISPs offer you a public IP
address and stay out of your way.
Beware of ISPs who outsource their last mile service to other
organizations -- you'll get very poor onsite technical support. Sify website
mentions that last mile service is outsourced to cable TV operators, who
in my opinion, are generally clueless about computer networking.
Perhaps a better course of action is to dump Sify and move to a different
ISP that does not have these shortcomings?
