[Ilugc] how to toggle between shell prompt and GUI desktop in Ubuntu?

Yesterday, one of our ILUGC member sent a mail asking me to check the 
/var/log/message about the "tty", I had missed that mail and somehow it 
is not retrievable.
May I request that gentleman to resend the same mail so that I can 
explore further on this issue?.
