If you are setting up only the client you need to know what the
server is using. The client you have installed is for Cisco's EasyVPN
server. There is another client network-manager-pptp for MicroSoft's
VPN and yet another for OpenVPN.

Authentication for any of these can be based on password or
shared key or private/public key with ssl certificate.

To use an ssl certificate you need to
 - create your own ssl private key preferably encrypted with a
 - create a certificate signing request.
 - send the certificate signing request to a CA whose authority is
 accepted by the VPN server.
 - install the signed certificate sent to you by the CA in a place
with can be accessed by the network manager.

I have not used network-manager for this but I am told that it can
make the above steps easy.
