This question came up a while ago and "abrotman" on #debian
just gave a nice answer so I'm passing it on.

Q: You are giving up a computer and would like to erase all
   data on it. Howto?

A: (courtesy dpkg bot on #debian on irc.debian.org and abrotman)
extra, extra, read all about it, dban is http://www.dban.org/
Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot floppy/CD
that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will
automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk
that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk
   or emergency data destruction.
