Hello Sanath !
Its really great that you jumped into FOSS movement earlier than me :)
Keep up the spirit !
Regarding project my suggestions are assuming you are a CS/IT
considering your academic pressure i guess you should take GNU/Linux as your
case study and use FOSS in for the following subject that you will encounter
1.System Software
2.Data Structures
3.OOPS
4.Operating Systems
5.Computer Networks
7.Cryptography & Network Security
So do your lab programs & assignments on Linux !
GCC is a wonderful too try compiling programs with & without compiler
optimization, compile it to 32bit & 64bit platforms.
"man gcc" is the command
Dump and see what is inside a binary using "objdump"
Good C book i suggest is "ANSI C: For Engineers & Scientist" by Gary
bronson.Good book for projects :)
It has even Numerical Methods problems. You can flaunt it to your maths staff
lol
Since you are interested in JVM is another cool concept.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JVM
Shell Scripts are must for linux users refer to "The UNIX Programming
Environment" by Brian W. Kernighan & Rob Pike
In Linux you have the following avenues
1.System Administration
2.Hardware & Networking
3.Application Programming
When you can come to position of contributing to open source projects,
please do :)
I guess it takes final year for that, depends on the individual.
Inspire your friends to take up FOSS.Never try to pull lot of people, but
let them understand FOSS concept then leave the choice to them. Please look
into slides from http://sirsasana.org/slides/
Best slides ! I love them. I used them to explain my juniors in my college.
Please feel free to contact me ! I love techy guys :)
