ftp is a good option for file transfers.
We try to use 'ssh'.
But to SSH or any other service, you need to specify a firewall rule that
allow SSH or other port request from the internet to come in.
This is called port forwarding
you can configure it using your browser or through command line.
i did telnet to my router.
Which IP to be used?.
you should distribute your public ip address to your friends.
192.168.X.X is a private ip address.
