PHP has a very hot market now-a-days.

Ofcourse, for web applications and haven't heard any company doing business with it other than web applications.

I do agree SME's use it extensively, but larger companies have also start to trust PHP.
As a employee of a CMMi level 4 company, i see quite a lot of bigger client's projects being done in PHP.
so, i don't see any reason, why he shouldn't start of with php.
