What is the BIOS setting for the hdd?  AUTO?  What other options does 
the bios have for the hdd settings?  Can you set the C/H/S values 
manually?

Has the manufacturer released any BIOS updates for your mobo?  If so, 
read what problem(s) it is solving and upgrade only if it provides a 
fix for your problem.  Make sure your system is powered by a "working" 
UPS while you flash the new BIOS.

Put this disk into a newer system and see if it exhibits the same 
symptoms.
