Possibility: Go to the sound mixer, and go to preferences, here select
all the tracks to be visible. Now try setting everything at maximum.

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 on an Acer laptop, and had to do that
to get the sound.

Also try killing some specific application (Firefox included! in
earlier versions of ubuntu, firefox used to lock my sound device
everytime gmail made the beep sound).
