OK, good. Pls. note the way I have responded to your message. Not top
posted, not bottom posted but **interleaved** addressing each of your
points as well as trimming a lot of unnecessary text.

Please elaborate the need. What is the purpose of MySQL?

What are you trying to do; write your own email client? An email client
should connect to the SMTP (send) POP3/IMAP (read) server using the
protocols that have been defined respectively. Assuming that you do
want write a client, that aspect has nothing to do with James which is
an integrated SMTP/NNTP/POP3/IMAP server.

Besides learning the SMTP commands and their sequence, what is the
objective of sending mail via telnet? IMO, you should first read up on
the basics of the SMTP command set and then you will get a much better
idea of how to implement your client.

postfix + dovecot does the job for me.
