this is not good advice - even for a personal development machine one should 
always do the right thing. Once people get into bad habits, it is difficult to 
correct later. Never ever fool with permissions on a nix system unless it is 
in your home directory. Those permissions are given with good reasons and 30 
years or more of experience. Do not tamper with them.
