I have a similar problem with an Intel server motherboard with an ATI
video chipset. Although the LCD monitor connected to it supports up
to 1280x1024, none of the distros tried so far go further than
1024x768. After some digging around I have found that the kernel
KMS needs to be compiled with an ATI flag that is not present in the
distros (openSUSE and Debian) I have tried till now. This could be
your problem. Compare the config files of the kernel from each
distro and see what diff between them throws out.
